| Description | The LDN catalog is named after American astronomer Beverly T. Lynds who, in 1962, was cataloging dark nebulae using the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey taken with the 48" Oschin Schmidt telescope. The darkest part of this very challenging nebula (the dark eye of the shark) is catalogued as LDN 1235. Most of the Shark is actually a reflection nebula, and substantially dimmer. it's unclear whether Lynds saw these features. That no astronomer had noticed this structure before 1962 (and even then saw only part of it) gives you some idea how challenging this actually is. It took me 3 attempts, and a very high quality night to capture this. |
