Rabbit in the Moon (When Full)
Rabbit in the Moon figure (Pareidolia) -- my former favorite.
Observer Comments
Target Description | Over the years, I've visited the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, a center of Mayan culture, at least half a dozen times (fishing for bonefish and permit in Ascension Bay). On one trip, I read an academic book on Mayan astronomy. One of the things that has stuck with me is the Mayan belief in the "Rabbit in the Moon". The book, being academic, didn't actually draw the figure, but I figured it out more or less as I've drawn it here. Until I saw the "Woman in the Moon" during this program, this was my favorite lunar Pareidolia. I'm still quite fond of it, in particular because I had to figure it out myself, and because it accounts for virtually all of the naked-eye maria. You'll note my interpretation varies slightly from the one provided by the AL. |
Image Capture Description | This full moon image was an opportunistic capture with my Seestar on a clear night with good visibility. At the time I was not contemplating the AL Lunar Program. |
