Rima Hyginus, a Spectacular Fissure

A 220k-long fissure or rille through the center of crater Hyginus.

Observer Comments

Target DescriptionRima Hyginus was another challenging target, possibly beyond the resolution limits of the Seestar. I initially searched several Seestar images before turning to this one. Fortunately, the lighting in this capture -- my highest resolution, taken with the EdgeHD -- was good enough. The rille runs right through the center of the crater Hyginus, barely visible, possibly because it is not an impact crater and does not have the raised rim which is making many other craters in the area easier to spot. It's located right where the second, darker linear feature hits Rima Hyginus at nearly right angles. It's unclear to me whether it's a second rille or a lava flow.
Image Capture DescriptionTechnically, this is the best lunar observation in this submission (at least so far). It takes advantage of the EdgeHD at full 2032mm focal length and 294 camera. This was my first experience with SharpCap's real-time lucky imaging. I had turned to it out of desperation because wildfire smoke had ruined multiple observing nights for much of the summer. Smoke turned the original image bright yellow (I converted it to grayscale). Despite the poor transparency, the combination of much longer focal length, lucky-image stacking, and wavelet sharpening delivers a much more detailed image than any of the Seestar captures.
