NINA Framing Assistant

NINA Framing Assistant

Nowadays, if you use platesolving, it’s easy to frame a target in the dead center of an image. However, besides being a boring composition, there may be very good reasons why you want to place the target somewhere other than the center.

Now, SharpCap does offer a Click to Recenter tool which works well and is pretty easy to use. But it’s after the fact (you may not see the need to re-frame until after you’ve captured some data, which you’ll need to throw away). It may take a few attempts to get it precisely where you want it. it also doesn’t offer you any direct assistance with rotating your sensor. If you have a square imager, no biggie. But if you use a rectangular sensor, shifting from landscape to portrait, or some angle in-between, may make or break the composition you’re after.

That’s why I love NINA’s framing assistant. You don’t need an electronic rotator, just tell NINA that you have a “Manual Rotator” installed. Then, when the time comes, it will give you instructions at the telescope, e.g.:, “Rotate camera 23° clockwise”. You do your best, it platesolves, and gives you feedback, “Rotate camera 5° clockwise,” until you get the error within a limit you set.
