DescriptionArp placed this target in the "Spiral galaxies with one heavy arm". His remarks aren't fully consistent with this category, and state:: "Comp[anion] appears physically connected to flat-on spiral system". My own interpretation is that this is indeed a 2-galaxy system, with the "heavy arm" being an edge on spiral galaxy physically connected to the "flat-on" spiral.

The suggests a fascinating aspect of galaxy observing in the mid-1960s. Keep in mind that Arp observed mostly on the 200" Hale Telescope, at the time, the finest instrument in the world. The optics of this telescope are outstanding, but its dependence on manual tracking and a single exposure on film means that its resolving power is only slightly better than my $5000 telescope and CMOS camera. At the time, galaxies mergers were thought to be rare events (if they ever happened), so Arp was clearly reluctant to list yet another "bright companion on arm" and instead keeps it in the Atlas as a "heavy arm".
