| Description | Caroline Herschel is a hero. Overshadowed by her brother William, she recorded the family's discoveries carefully. Her records did need to be cleaned up by the NGC, roughly 100 years later, but very few observations were lost. This is a handsome, open cluster, and the first one Caroline ever discovered (indeed, her first DSO of any kind). Somehow she had a penchant for discovering some of the most beautiful open clusters in the canon: Caroline's Rose is another favorite of mine. At Dec -15.6 I can't observe this target from my pier, even though it reaches elevations in the mid-20°'s. However, it's straight forward from my deck using the Seestar as it's about 50' further from the southern trees, and a dozen feet higher elevation than the pier. |
