DescriptionHeart & Soul are two of my favorite nebulae. Discovered in pieces over the years, the designations are extremely confusing. Best, no doubt because the latest, is the Sharpless Catalog: Heart Nebula is Sh2-190 and Soul is Sh2-199. NGC 896 was discovered first, and refers to the bright tip of the Heart nebula, aka "Fish Head Nebula". Similarly, the IC catalog picks off three additional bright spots in the Heart: IC 1805, 1831, and 1795, as well as two spots on the Soul, IC 1848 and 1871. I've observed these two nebulae many times. We're showing our 11/16/23 observation, which is my favorite, where I used the NINA framing assistant for the first time. OTA was my Askar V at 270mm. I've added a later, very wide-field view using my Askar FMA180.
