| Description | A fun target in the July 25 CN EAA challenge. This is the main emission nebula is the strawberry-like object in the center. A few, not very prominent reflection nebulae (the NGC objects) are scattered to its left. It might seem surprising that the tiny reflection nebulae were discovered before the "strawberry". You know this because the NGC objects were all discovered before 1885, and the IC catalog was a supplement, published starting around 1900 and 1915. However, to a visual astronomer, the strawberry is virtually impossible to see. IC 1284 was almost certainly discovered with photography, and likely required the correct filter to capture it. |
