DescriptionThis was apparently one of Messier's first discoveries. There is a reason, of course, why there are so many globular clusters in the Messier Catalog... they look a lot like comets do, especially when viewed through a blurry telescope. The Messier list was really trying to catalog "not comets" rather than DSOs in the sense that we think of them now.
