| Description | This is a handsome, barred galaxy thought to be similar in size and structure to the Milky Way (though its arms are less distinct than in our galaxy). At magnitude 11.5, it's a challenging object for visual observers and therefore not very well known. It was a "challenge" object in the Dec 2024 EAA Challenge, but compared to the Arp galaxies I usually capture, large and moderately bright. NGC 1073 is an estimated 55 million light years from the Milky Way, and 80,000 light years across. |
