DescriptionThis is a handsome "grand design" spiral whose rotation curve was one (of 21) that Vera Rubin measured in her seminal paper. It found that the outer arms rotated at the same speed as the inner arms: something that implied gravitational support from unseen material to keep the structure from flying apart.
