DescriptionThis is an obscure galaxy, evidenced by the fact that the Astronomety.net annotation doesn't show it, and because UGC is the most prominent catalog that lists it. Surprising since it's pretty large, but at 12th magnitude it's pretty dim. UGC is a 1973 catalog based on the Palomar galaxy survey, and is intended to be complete for all galaxies larger than 1 arcminute and brighter than 14.5 magnitude. A fun, challenging target. Interestingly, Arp has a category of "Integral sign" galaxies but doesn't include it in his Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. It was a CN Feb '24 Challenge target.
