| Description | A gorgeous open cluster nearly the size of the full moon, discovered by French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille (Abbé de La Caille) in 1751 or 1752 while he was at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. This was a reasonably "comfortable" capture at 15° elevation and 5.8 magnitude. When I first looked at it, I thought it might be a globular cluster. On second examination, it lacks the dense, circular globe. Captured from a location near Tybee Island, near Savannah, GA, to which I'd returned around 4AM. |
