| Description | Another William Herschel discovery from 1784. I must say Phillip does seem to like his edge-on galaxies. I count 22 spiral, barred spiral, or lenticular galaxies among the first 70 Caldwell objects. Seven of them are edge-on, nearly one-third. The overall estimates I could find suggested 10% to 15% of all spirals are edge-on, which seems about right. If correct, this suggests Mr Moore is selecting them at about 2x their normal occurrence. |
