DescriptionThe Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) was discovered visually by English astronomer Thomas Henry Espin on August 13, 1899, while German astronomer Max Wolf was the first to photograph it in 1900. Wolf was the first to describe its distinctive starless trail (dark nebula). A fascinating melange of an emission nebula accented by reflection nebulae, set against a dark nebula in a dense star-field.
